Architect named for new $26m school

Oldfield Knott Architects has been chosen to design the new $26 million primary school in Hammond Park, set to open in two years' time.

Construction for the new facility, named Wattleup East Primary School for planning, is scheduled to start later this year.

The development would include early childhood teaching and administration blocks, general learning areas, art and science specialist rooms, music room and library.

Education and training Minister Sue Ellery said the new facility would relieve some of the enrolment pressure on other schools.

"Hammond Park is a growing suburb and popular with young families who will be pleased to hear that a new primary school will be ready for the 2024 school year,” she said.

The school is expected to accommodate 430 students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Wattleup East Primary School is one of the two new schools announced by the state government in December, alongside Henley Brook South Primary School at a cost of $26.35 million.

Rooftop solar panels will be installed at both schools and space has been set aside on the sites for a future Educare facility to be run by a third party.

Oldfield also designed the $24 million Wellard Village Primary School, which is set to open in 2023.

The Daglish-based firm was established in 1973.
