AWB buy welcome

THE Western Australian Farmers Federation has greeted the announcement of AWB Ltd’s acquisition of Wesfarmers Landmark with cautious optimism.

In a statement, WA Farmers Federation president Colin Nicholl said the AWB would be under increased pressure to ensure it maintained focus on its core business – marketing the nation’s wheat crop and maximising returns for growers.

“Our directors can’t afford to be distracted by the acquisition and take their eyes off the main game,” Mr Nicholl said.

If managed properly, he said, the future of the single desk would be enhanced by the deal.

“It should be up to growers to determine the future of the single desk, not a vocal majority of self-interested individuals. In Western Australia, support for the single desk remains at a high level and I am confident that the Government recognises this fact,” Mr Nicholl said.
