AMEC pushes for broader port charges review

The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies has applauded state government plans to review charges for the Utah Point bulk export facility at Port Hedland but wants the review extended to other ports.

Speaking at the Global Iron Ore and Steel Forecast Conference and Exhibition in Perth yesterday, Finance Minister Bill Marmion said the Department of Finance would be undertaking a review of the charges imposed by the Pilbara Ports Authority.

AMEC chief executive Simon Bennison said it was a good starting point but the Pilbara Ports Authority was not an isolated issue.

He said the minister should broaden the review to other ports in WA where price gouging is an issue.

“AMEC raised concerns of price gouging on port charges with Mr Marmion and Treasurer Mike Nahan, and remains concerned that charges are excessive and inequitable between users,” Mr Bennison said.

“During those discussions, AMEC requested the government undertake a review to stimulate a reduction in port charges, including the port improvement fee.”

The PPA recently announced it would hold prices at current levels until the beginning of next year.

“This was positive but does not go far enough,” Mr Bennison said.

His comments follow calls by iron ore exporter Mineral Resources for a reduction in port charges at Kwinana and Port Hedland.
