Compass Group is hoping to expand its Kambalda East accommodation for mine site workers with a $30 million addition.

The global service is the operator of Kambalda Village on Durkin Road, which accommodates workers from surrounding mines and contractors.

CLE Town Planning + Design, on behalf of Compass Group, lodged a $30 million proposal to the Regional Joint Development Assessment Panel.

Compass Group is proposing to demolish 56 rooms, construct 264 new rooms and replace the dining hall and kitchen facility.

The current village has 574 rooms, a dining room, tavern, swimming pool and gymnasium.

In the applicant’s report, CLE said the proposal would add 208 rooms to the existing facility.

“Compass has identified an opportunity to expand and upgrade the existing Kambalda facility which will significantly improve the presentation of the site and enhance the amenity offerings,” it said.

“The additional 208 rooms will help increase the patronage of local services and amenities by increasing the resident population, contributing to economic growth and development in the region.”

According to the report, the village could accommodate up to 700 people with 450 of them away on site during a work day.

The new dining hall and kitchen will replace the existing cafeteria and will have a capacity of 250.

The Shire of Coolgardie has supported Compass Group’s plan, recommending the panel approve the proposal at its meeting next week.

However, the shire council imposed some conditions if the panel was to approve, including no construction activities before 7am or after 7pm from Monday to Saturday and no work at all on Sunday or public holidays.
