29 public schools to become independent in semester two

Public schools in Bayswater, Kenwick and Lathlain are among 29 set to be designated as independent public schools from semester two.

The independent public school program, introduced in 2009, allows public schools to have greater autonomy in decision making while being subject to stricter regulation, both through the creation of a school board and being subject to financial auditing and oversight.

More than 600 public schools in Western Australia, including those announced this morning, have received the designation since the program was introduced.

In addition, five schools scheduled to open in 2021 will be designated as independent public schools, including Sunningdale Primary School, Brabham Primary School, Southern River Primary School, Harrisdale North Primary School and Baldivis South Primary School.

“The independent public school program draws on the strong relationships schools have with their local communities and gives them the autonomy to make decisions that best suit their students, staff and families,” Education Minister Sue Ellery said.

“I am pleased to announce that among the latest independent public schools intake are schools from across the state, from the Kimberley to the South West.”
