$20m upgrade for Perth intersection

Thursday, 19 August, 2021 - 14:30

Local company Highway Construction has been tasked with upgrading a major intersection in Tuart Hill, as part of a $20 million project.

Highway Construction, based in Bassendean, will improve all four approaches to the intersection of Wanneroo Road and Morley Drive, which is estimated to be used by more than 25,000 vehicles a day.

There have been 192 reported crashes at the intersection between 2015 and 2020, with most of these rear-end collisions.

Highway Construction has been tasked with adding extra lanes on Morley Drive and Wanneroo Road; installing pedestrian crossings; and modifying traffic control signals and upgrading infrastructure.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the overall project would improve traffic flow and efficiency, as well as support 140 jobs.

Work begins next month and is expected to be completed by late 2022.

The project is being delivered by Main Roads Western Australia and the Public Transport Authority of WA, with the federal government contributing $10 million.

Federal urban infrastructure minister Paul Fletcher said the project was one of 177 included in the Urban Congestion Fund.

Of those, 68 projects are under way, with a further 47 expected to start construction next year.
