Chris Sutherland, managing director, Programmed

As managing director of Programmed, Chris Sutherland leads one of Western Australia’s largest employers.

With more than 20,000 employees nationally, its services range from painting and grounds services at many schools and universities, to maintaining complex infrastructure at Rottnest Island, through to providing many plant operators and shutdown services in the mining sector.

With Programmed providing services across all sectors of the economy, Chris can offer telling insights into the state of the economy in WA and nationally, with his professional experience including more than 10 years as the CEO of a large ASX-listed company.

Programmed has been tuned into the ongoing changes in labour demand and skills required across all sectors including resources, infrastructure, manufacturing, transport and health.

Chris has led the organisation through the GFC, the resources boom and, via a number of major acquisitions, has built Australia’s leading provider of staffing and maintenance services. This was recognised by major Japanese group Persol, which last October acquired Programmed for an enterprise value of about $1 billion. Chris continues to lead Programmed and is now working with the Tokyo-based group to consider the strategic expansion of the business into Asia.

Chris has led an organisation through a deep commitment to core values built around:

• personal safety leadership;

• care and empathy for the people around you;

• good old-fashioned customer service;

• diversity, inclusion and equality.

He currently chairs the CEOs for Gender Equity and was recently awarded Australian Human Resources Institute CEO Diversity Champion award.
