OUR MAN IN CANBERRA?
Hon Christian Porter has boldly forfeited a career path that could virtually have guaranteed him the coveted title of WA Premier, in favour of a starting at the base of the federal politics ladder. Join us for breakfast, where political correspondent Peter Kennedy will tease out the aspirations driving this surprise move and what this means for business in Western Australia.
Christian Porter was born and raised in Perth. In 2008, he became Member for Murdoch and after being sworn in to Parliament, he was promptly appointed to first the front bench, then Shadow Attorney General. He then became the Member for the seat of Bateman and was appointed Attorney General and Minister for Corrective Services. Christian was the youngest Attorney General in WA history.
Within 2 years, Christian was appointed as WA Treasurer, while retaining the portfolio of Attorney General. On 12 June 2012 Christian resigned from his ministerial positions to seek pre-selection as the Liberal candidate for the Federal seat of Pearce.
In his time as a minister, Christian designed and implemented a suite of criminal justice policies which saw the achievement over a year of a 10% decrease in overall rates of reported crime. As Treasurer, Christian delivered successive budget surpluses and the provision of $600million to the West Australian not for profit sector and established the 1 billion dollar WA Future Fund.
Christian strives to improve core Government services including law and order, education and health; where the greatest positive difference to people’s lives can be achieved.
