Building a Resourceful Community

The mining sector has long been associated with isolated locations and the personal isolation that comes with this. Over the last decade Women in Mining and Resources WA has built a very strong and dynamic community for women in mining.

Sabina Shugg will talk about her motivation for starting WIMWA, the early days, the learnings and the current initiatives that are successfully helping many men and women to overcome isolation and build their own networks to be part of both the mining community and the women in mining community.

Sabina Shugg is the Head of Mining with Momentum Partners and has extensive experience in senior roles within some of the largest resource and consulting organisations in Australia. Sabina's work has a strong people focus together with a solid project management and operational background.

Sabina has a MBA from UWA, a degree in Mining Engineering from WA School of Mines and holds a First Class Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency. She founded and runs WIMWA (Women in Mining and Resources WA) which has grown to 1500 members state-wide since its inception in 2003. In 2010, Sabina was named the inaugural Women in Resources Champion in the CMEWA Women in Resources Awards, for being an outstanding role model to people in the resources industry and the broader community. In 2011 Sabina was honoured to be included as one of the first 100 women to be inducted into the WA Women's Hall of Fame.
