WASM Alumni have introduced a new annual event for the members and industry: MIC Mining, Innovation & Collaboration kicks off this year with a very special guest Mr Nev Power.

Nev Power, Chief Executive Officer, Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (Fortescue) leads one of the world’s largest, lowest cost producers of iron ore, recognised for its unique culture, innovation and world class infrastructure and mining assets in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Since his appointment in July 2011, Fortescue has more than quadrupled its production to 165-170 million tonnes per annum and, through an unwavering focus on productivity and efficiency, has positioned itself as the lowest cost supplier of seaborne iron ore to China. In FY16, Fortescue generated revenue of approximately US$7.1 billion. Nev leads Fortescue’s strong values based culture, its commitment to safety excellence and to ensuring that the company’s success helps build strong and sustainable communities. Fortescue employs 1,300 Aboriginal people, 15 per cent of the workforce, and through its Billion Opportunities program has awarded over A$1.85 billion in contracts to Aboriginal businesses.

Nev became a White Ribbon Ambassador in 2015 to influence, educate and show leadership on the issue of family and domestic violence in workplaces and the wider community. In 2016, he was named WA Business Leader of the Year. Prior to joining Fortescue, Nev held Chief Executive positions at Thiess and the Smorgon Steel Group adding to his extensive background in the mining, steel and construction industries. Nev sits on the Fortescue board as Managing Director; is a Fellow of both Engineers Australia and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors; and the International Advisory Board for Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat’sen University, China. He is an INSEAD graduate and holds a Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Business Administration. Nev was raised on a grazing property in western Queensland and continues to run the family cattle business. He is married with three adult sons.
