WA agriculture - from mining boom to dining boom

Venue:

Overview

Join CEDA as the new WA Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Ken Baston MLC, and our panel of agricultural experts explore the opportunities and challenges facing agriculture in Western Australia. Can WA build economic diversification through a sustainable and prosperous agricultural sector?

As a net exporter of food products such as wheat, cattle and sheep, WA’s farming outputs help to feed the world and support the economy, generating $112.4 billion worth of income in 2010-11 and contributing 42 per cent of Australia’s total exports.

With global food demand set to double by 2050, Western Australia should be ideally placed to take advantage of this growing demand, particularly given our proximity to Asia. But with mounting concerns over the sustainability of the agricultural sector, can we continue to feed the world as well as ourselves? Can an industry that is already one of the most productive in world, further increase productivity by 70 per cent in the next 40 years using less farmland and water?

Is it possible for WA agriculture to overcome the challenges to recognise its potential of becoming the world’s food bowl and underpin the State’s economy?
