Like all cities, Perth is not one homogeneous whole but rather a collection of regions, suburbs and communities. As Perth grows to become a more cosmopolitan, denser city and diversifies outside of the CBD, one of our greatest challenges – and opportunities – will be how well we enhance this and plan for Perth to become a city of villages; a city of individual precincts and localities that are well connected, yet have their own sense of purpose, identity and ‘personality’ and draw people in to create vibrant, active communities.

There are many cities around the world that have sought to become a city of villages such as London, New York and Melbourne. Attend this Luncheon to hear what has been done elsewhere; what we can learn; and importantly, how we can shape Perth’s future as a diverse, vibrant and liveable city of villages through:
- defining the location and nature of the public realm
- determining the appropriate scale, form and use of the buildings and activities that will give definition to the public realm
- identifying and reinforcing the essential character that already exists in each place
- how we engage the community and gain support for essential new developments that can activate spaces and deliver greater amenity

Following a keynote presentation by Dean Landy (architect, urban designer, and author) on Creating Vibrant Communities, Andrew Sugiaputra (Managing Director, Golden Group) will present a case study overview of one of Perth’s most exciting projects, the redevelopment of Belmont Park, WA’s largest ever masterplanned community & the newest example of village creation in Perth.
