Hon John Anderson AO is a sixth generation farmer, whose family started farming in northern NSW from the 1840s.  Born in 1956, tragedy marked his early life.  He became a Christian as a teenager and has held firmly to his faith ever since that time.

After graduating from the University of Sydney with a Master of Arts, he returned to the family farm for some years, during which time he married his wife of 25 years, Julia and settled into family life.

But politics was calling.   He was elected to Federal Parliament in 1989 as the National Party member for Gwydir, and held the Ministerial portfolios of Primary Industries and Energy and then Transport & Regional Development.

In July 1999 he was elected National Party leader, thus becoming Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, a post he held from 1999 to 2005, a turbulent period which encompassed the collapse of Ansett airlines and the attack on the World Trade Centre.

When John announced his retirement from politics, the then Prime Minister John Howard paid tribute to his integrity and high personal standards, saying:

“There is no finer human being in public life than John Anderson.”

Since leaving public life, he has been chairman of a successful energy company.
