Peter was born and educated in Perth, graduating from the University of WA with a BA (Economics major) and a Diploma of Education.

He began his working life as a high school teacher and switched to journalism when he joined The West Australian in 1970. He moved to The Sydney Morning Herald in 1977 and covered politics in both Sydney and Canberra, before returning to Perth in 1984 as press secretary to then Deputy Premier Mal Bryce. He joined the ABC in 1990 and presented both the Morning and Drive programs on 720 Perth, before being appointed the State Political Reporter for ABC TV News in 2000.

After retiring in 2010, he became an Adjunct Professor at the University of Notre Dame Australia. His book, Tales From Boom Town – Western Australian Premiers from Brand to Barnett, was published in 2014. Peter contributes the Political Perspective column for WA Business News.
