Perth in Focus: The Vancouver Story, What can Perth learn?
Perth has a similar population to Vancouver but by comparison we have a metropolitan population density of only 310 people per square kilometre. And for decades, there’s been a great deal of resistance to that changing yet at the same time we increasingly object to the costs of sprawl like long commutes, congestion and the clearing of vegetation at a rate of nearly 1.5 football fields a day or 10 per week.
To help inform the conversation about a bright future, the Committee for Perth’s next Perth in Focus luncheon will feature former City of Vancouver Councillor and Director of The City Program at Simon Fraser University, Gordon Price.
Gordon will talk about Vancouver’s transformation and how it has brought economic, environmental and social benefits.
Following the keynote address, Dr. Julian Bolleter, a Research Fellow at The University of Western Australia’s, The Australian Urban Design Research Centre will give a presentation into his research on Perth's density followed by a Q&A panel session including Sue Doherty, Mayor of the City of South Perth and Russell Aubrey, Mayor of the City of Melville.
