Perth in Focus: Budget Pressures 2014

Several months after they handed down their budgets, governments in Perth and Canberra are struggling to sell their message that their finances are under control. Standard & Poor’s has already indicated that WA’s credit rating is unlikely to be restored given its “average budget performance.”
Key parts of the Commonwealth budget remain controversial and may not be passed by Parliament. On top of that, there are also much bigger long-term challenges, including increased spending on health and defence, expensive new programs such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Paid Parental Leave, and a fall in minerals prices.
The problem now facing our State and Commonwealth governments is, what should and can they do to ensure their finances are sustainable?
At our final Perth in Focus luncheon for the year, John Daley, chief executive of the Grattan Institute will present the findings of the research 'Budget Pressures 2014.' John will explore the issue of whether the state and commonwealth governments are properly managing their finances.
The event will examine two key themes:
• What can Governments do to get their budgets under control?
• What are the challenges and opportunities for Perth, given the State’s AAA credit rating is unlikely to be restored in the near future.
