Navigating the Boardroom

Did you ever want experience being on a board but lacked confidence? Have you been on a board where there was a conflict of interest? Or do you have an overbearing/underperforming chairman and don’t know what to do? If you answered ´Yes’ then we encourage you to attend and participate in Navigating the Boardroom.

Navigating the Boardroom offers the unique experience to sit on a simulated board with some of Perth’s most experienced directors and company secretaries. And if sitting on the simulated board isn’t for you, there is the option to sit back, observe and take note.

Over four weeks each session will focus on different issues such as; managing conflict of interests, disclosure, compliance, independence and management of different personalities and behaviours.

Session One
Tuesday, 21 July
Conflict of interest and directors who don’t read board papers.

Session Two
Wednesday, 5 August
Risk and management of personalities.

Session Three
Wednesday, 12 August
Compliance in relation to ASX disclosure and independence.

Leanne Cretney-Barnes, Principal, Board Connexions
Lianne has held senior positions in both private and public sector organisations for over 20 years and has considerable experience in strategic marketing, branding and business development. She is also a Board Member and Chair of the Integrity Assurance Committee for Racing & Wagering WA, Deputy Chair of ChemCentre and the WA Partner for Women on Boards.

Hon Sheila McHale GIA(Cert), CEO, Palmerston Association Inc
Sheila is a former Member of Parliament (12 years) and a Cabinet Minister for eight years. During this time she held a range of portfolios including Tourism, Consumer Protection, Community Development, Culture and the Arts, Disability Services. Sheila is also a member of the national advisory body to the ACNC, vice chair of the peak association WANADA the CCI’s Health and Community Services Forum.

Rob McKenzie, Executive Director, Jackson McDonald
Rob is a lawyer practising in the corporate and commercial areas. He was a partner in one of Australia’s major national law firms for 22 years. He is presently a commissioner of the WA Football Commission, a director of Black Swan State Theatre Company Ltd and a member of the Takeovers Panel. He was a director of the West Coast Eagles Football Club, Mundo Minerals Ltd and has chaired The Hole in The Wall Theatre Company Ltd.

Paige McNeil AGIA, Director & Company Secretary, Exploration & Management Consultants Pty Ltd
Paige has over 14 years corporate administration and operational experience in the mineral exploration industry in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Paige is also a 2010 recipient of WA Business 40under40 award.

Dylan Darbyshire-Roberts AGIA, Company Secretary, Mermaid Marine Australia Ltd
Dylan commenced at Mermaid in 2007 as a Commercial Manager until acquiring the role of Company Secretary in 2008. He has worked in a legal capacity in many jurisdictions, as well as the UK over the past 15 years. Dylan is qualified as a Solicitor in South Africa, New South Wales and Western Australia

Mark Thomas FGIA, Group Manager Infrastructure Services, Fortescue Metals Group Ltd
Mark joined Fortescue in 2004 in the role of Group Financial Controller and went on to become Head of Finance and IT and then Group Manager Finance. He was appointed Company Secretary in 2010 and in 2015 stepped into the role of Group Manager Infrastructure Services. He has more than 20 years experience in the mining and professional services industries and has also held senior finance positions with the Goldfields Australia Group and with a number of professional service providers. He is also a Board Member of ChemCentre.
