Indonesia - Getting to Know our Neighbour
10 September 2013
Parmelia Hilton Perth
Mining and Resources Briefing
Indonesia is our neighbour to the north, but whilst China attracts all the attention, the significance of our relationship and the opportunities for Australian businesses with this country can not be understated. Australians have been working in and around Indonesia for many years in mining, agribusiness and services and yet the country is only just opening up. Over one billion in aid has been earmarked for Indonesia and two-way trade is increasing, necessitating close cooperation in political, security and environmental matters.
In 2012, the McKinsey Global Institute produced a seminal report The archipelago economy: Unleashing Indonesia’s potential, which examined Indonesia’s productivity imperative, its uneven growth and its resource shortfalls in the context of one of the fastest-growing markets in Asia.
Join us for a unique briefing which will be led by Penny Burtt who served in Australia’s Embassy in Jakarta, as Assistant Secretary for Southeast Asia in the Department of Foreign Affairs and was closely involved in McKinsey & Company’s special Indonesia report. Drawing on her experience working in Indonesia, she will share the highlights of McKinsey’s research on the Indonesian economy and then be joined by Owen Hegarty of Tiger Realm Minerals, who are willing to share his insights and “war stories” about doing business with our near neighbour.
