IPAA WA Event - Inclusion: Harnessing diversity to drive performance
Increase team performance with a culturally diverse workforce
In the rapidly changing demographic environment that is Western Australia, public sector organisations are increasingly employing diverse workforces. Age, ethnography, and disability are key areas where change can be observed. There is a community expectation that the public service should reflect the community it serves in its employment profile. The resulting diversity will affect organisational culture as people with different values and behaviours are required to work together toward common goals.
A key objective of managers and leaders is to create an effective workplace culture, as this is vital to achieving a high performing organisation. Diversity therefore presents many opportunities and challenges for managers and leaders. Currently it is felt that organisations are not getting the most from their diverse workforces. There is a need therefore to discuss what the issues are, and the leadership traits necessary to bring about high performance.
Beyond the compulsory nature of diversity targets, what are the benefits to be gained from inclusive diverse workforces? What are the challenges? And, what strategies can leaders employ to not only maintain but improve business performance with a diverse workforce?
