The Western Australian Government is planning for the future development of the Perth and Peel regions to accomodate a population of 3.5 million by 2050.

The purpose of the strategic assessment review is to:
- significantly reduce red tape for project assessment in the Perth and Peel regions.
- deliver an effective long term and strategic response to key environmental issues in the Perth and Peel regions.
- provide greater certainty to industry as to which areas can be developed and what the obligations will be in terms of mitigation, including environmental offsets.
- provide greater certainty in terms of long term land supply and land use planning to meet the needs of a city of 3.5 million.
