This year’s lecture will be presented by the Honourable Justice Neville Owen, former senior judge of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

Corporate governance: grist or garnish?

Idle musings on the inexplicable and the ineffective.

It is sometimes said that corporate governance regimes have become so prescriptive that too much money is spent for too little return and that they stifle the entrepreneurial spirit. This may be so if we fail to define what corporate governance is, what it is designed to do and how it is best used.

In this presentation, Justice Neville Owen goes back to basics to answer those questions and more. He demonstrates how corporate governance (properly understood and implemented) is a matter of common sense and that its fundamental purpose is to facilitate decision-making in a moral framework.
