Our three speakers will be talking around the theme of grants and investments, and how to best present your startup business if seeking capital.

Digital disruption - are you prepared and can you take advantage?

Charlie Gunningham, Commercialisation Adviser, Department of Industry, Innovation and Science

Charlie Gunningham is an active supporter of Perth’s tech startup sector, running Startup News and sitting on various advisory boards. His full-time role is with the federal government’s Accelerating Commercialisation programme, which provides commercial advice and matching grants of up to $1 million for eligible innovative projects. Having landed in Perth in 1997, Charlie topped the MBA at the UWA Business School, co-founded and then later sold aussiehome.com, ran reiwa.com and was CEO of Business News.

In an interactive talk chock full of business examples and personal experiences (some of them painful!), Charlie will present:

  • What's the difference between innovation and disruption?
  • Who could (or is) disrupting your industry?
  • How could you 'disrupt yourself' (and should you)?
  • What main technologies could you jump on?
  • Who's doing this 'disruption thing' well in Perth?
  • What's the $1M innovation grant and how do I get me $1M?!

Andrew Larsen, Investment Director, Larsen Ventures

Andrew Larsen is the Investment Director at Larsen Ventures and a Venture Partner at Tempus Partners. He is an active investor, mentor and advocate for early stage entrepreneurship and investment in Australia’s future. Andrew focuses on the Health and Education sectors, but has backed Founders in ChatTech, SportsTech and even BrainTech. Andrew is keen to see Australia diversify its economy, securing its journey into tomorrow’s world.

Andrew will share with us:

  • Why people would turn to a family office/angel investor rather than alternatives
  • What a family office is looking for and how to build a good business case
  • What you should look for in an investor in addition to capital

 

Taking on capital - experience from a Perth startup business

Dr. Genevieve Hohnen, Co-Founder, The Volte

Dr. Genevieve Hohnen is the COO and Co-Founder of The Volte. She leads the technical and operations side of The Volte as well as being involved in strategic planning. Genevieve has a PhD from Murdoch University and has significant experience building organisations and programs in a number of fields. She was the coordinator of the Open University Program for politics, international relations, counter-terrorism and sustainability at Murdoch University. In this role, Genevieve was responsible for developing content but also managing the backend architecture of the education technology and also managing the community aspects of the user experience. She has a passion for technology, sustainability and harnessing the new power of the sharing economy.

Genevieve will share her experience in taking on capital:

  • How to get investment ready
  • Looking for the right investor
  • Working with your key investors
