In the 21st century, the minerals sector is facing increasing challenges. A combination of higher environmental costs, declining high-quality exploitable reserves and great socio-political pressure is putting the economic returns of minerals companies under ever-increasing pressure. New generation exploration success is one potential game-changer. The future will be a battle of a ‘below-ground’ declining mineral quality pushing costs upward, versus ‘above-ground’ technology and innovation driving costs downward. To survive and thrive in such a future - and indeed in alternate futures - minerals companies will need to focus on building and implementing 'excellence'.

Ms Alexandra Atkins
Alex’s multi-disciplinary mining career, which started in 1986 in Kalgoorlie WA, spans 25+ years all over Australia & PNG. Her experience is mostly in underground base and precious metals (minor open cut experience) as a mining engineer, geologist and geotechnical engineer.

Dr Michael Anderson
Dr Anderson has over 25 years’ industry experience, largely in southern Africa and Australia. His career commenced as a geologist with Anglo American, followed by roles in the metallurgical and engineering industries with Mintek, Bateman and Kellogg Brown & Root. He joined Taurus Funds Management as a Director in August 2011 and has served as a Non-Executive Director on the Boards of a number of Taurus’ investee companies.

Ms Liz Wall
Liz is a social development and environmental specialist with over 15 years’ experience working with extractive sector projects in developing countries. She has extensive experience working with projects in complex social environments in more than 40 countries, including thirteen countries in Africa. Liz is devoted to helping communities in developing countries experience the positive benefits and minimise the adverse impacts of natural resource sector led development.

Ms Jill Terry
Jill is the Vice President, Geoscience at BHP Billiton and is accountable for public reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves. She is passionate about optimising extraction of ore-bodies through excellence in mine geology incorporating technology developments where applicable. Jill is a strong advocate for diversity in teams and retention of mothers in the workforce.

Professor Allan Trench
Allan Trench is Professor of Practice at the UWA Business School and also Research Professor, Progressive Risk and Value, at the Centre for Exploration Targeting (UWA). He is a non-executive director of a number of emerging ASX-listed minerals companies and the Perth representative for CRU Consulting, a division of the independent metals and mining advisory CRU Group.
