A Journey Through Philanthropy

Nicola Forrest, CEO of the Minderoo Foundation, is one of Australia’s most energetic and committed philanthropists. Since establishing the Foundation with her husband Andrew in 2001, Nicola has developed and refined her approach to giving, along the way combining motherhood and community interests with business and philanthropy. In this presentation, she will discuss her approach to prioritising partnerships for success, focusing on her passion for early childhood development as a key example of Minderoo’s philosophy to give a hand up, rather than a hand out. Nicola has led the diversification of the Minderoo Foundation to provide a holistic approach to community development, particularly through education and the arts, believing an integrated approach is essential to build sustainable empowerment in individuals and communities.

In addition to the Minderoo Foundation, Nicola is a member of the Prime Minister’s Community Business Partnership, Telethon Kids Institute CoLab Advisory Council and Governor of the Forrest Research Foundation. Nicola supports a number of community and arts organisation as Patron including the Kimberley Rock Art Foundation and Impact100 WA and is a Life Governor of Sculpture by the Sea. Along with Nicola’s philanthropic work she is also a director of the Minderoo Group, one of Australia's largest private companies, and Managing Director of Minderoo Station’s pastoral operations in the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions of Western Australia.

Nicola was awarded the Celebrate WA Western Australian of the Year (community category) in 2014, and in 2016 was awarded the University of Canberra’s Chancellor’s Award for Services to Philanthropy. Nicola has also been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Western Australia.

Underpinning Nicola’s philanthropic philosophy is the importance of early intervention and prevention, with a particular focus on children. By working with children and families from the beginning of life, Nicola believes we can stop the manifestation of serious social, health and economic issues in future generations.

The Minderoo Foundation was established by Andrew and Nicola Forrest in 2001 and was originally known as the Australian Children’s Trust. The Foundation’s work was based on the mandate to give a hand up, not a hand out and that ethos remains today. Since establishment, the Foundation has supported over 250 initiatives across Australia and internationally in pursuit of a range of causes. These include fighting modern slavery, ending Indigenous disadvantage, ensuring all children in Australia thrive by five, strengthening arts, culture and community through partnerships, and attracting the world’s best minds to Western Australia.
