AICD | Emerging Director Briefing: Making the move | Executive to board director
Most successful directors have transitioned from a role as an executive within an organisation to a role as a professional board member. Often an individual holds both roles at one time – functioning as an executive on one day, and a director the next.
Making this transition isn’t always straightforward. One of the biggest challenges is learning to reduce the focus on outcomes-focused management and instead fulfill the strategic and governance role of a director. Another challenge is making good decisions about your first board roles.
In this briefing, we will explore the transition of four of WA’s successful directors who have made the move from executive to director. We’ll highlight their lessons learned as they provide advice and tips from their personal experiences. Some of the questions we’ll discuss include:
• What skills and behaviours should you bring with you to the boardroom, and what do you leave behind?
• What do you look for in your first board position, and how do you assess the fit?
• Is a not-for-profit board the right first step?
We hope to see you and your colleagues there for this engaging and insightful discussion.
