The Nexus between the Resources Industry and Innovation

The Panel discussion will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating new technologies and innovations into Western Australian minerals and oil and gas exploration and production operations. Marketing new technologies and innovations to these industries can prove challenging. A focus on speed to production, and production reliability in times of high commodity prices and cost cutting in times of low commodity prices; high switching costs associated with capital intensive projects; and entrenched supply-chains in some sectors are some of the factors that can create significant barriers to companies trying to sell new technologies and innovations to the mining and oil and gas industries. Nevertheless, many sectors of these industries have very high technology intensities. The ability of the Western Australian minerals and oil and gas industries to competitively find, exploit and market its natural resources will be increasingly dependent on the development and deployment of new technologies.
