St Barbara’s Day pays tribute to the patron saint of mining and geology. Traditionally held on the first Friday of December, the WA Mining Club’s members and their guests take the opportunity to pause and appreciate the people dedicated to the mining industry, and celebrate the rich endowment of mineral wealth that underpins much of our economy and provides hope for the future. It is a time for fellowship and fraternity, and to remember those who have been lost in our industry throughout the past year.

This year our guest speaker Sharon Warburton, Chair and Non Executive Director, will present Goal digging in Steel Heels. After an executive career in strategy and finance roles based in Perth, Sydney, London and Abu Dhabi, Sharon is now a full-time Chair and Non-Executive Company Director. She is the 2014 WA Telstra Business Woman of the Year and was named in the 2015 Westpac AFR 100 Women of Influence. Sharon is Chair of NAIF (Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility), on the Boards of FMG, NEXTDC Limited, Gold Road Resources, Barminco, and Western Power. She is a Director of the Foundation for the Perth Children’s Hospital, a part-time member of the Takeovers Panel, a Director of the Gold Industry Group, on the WA Rhodes Scholarship selection panel, and is the Patron of the Women in MBA Scholarship Programme at Curtin University. Sharon holds a Bachelor of Business degree from Curtin University and is an AICD graduate. She is also a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Building. Sharon is a single parent to 7-year-old Chloe. She champions flexibility, diversity and work life balance and places a high priority on sharing her own experiences. Sharon mentors thousands of emerging leaders through her digital mentoring platform.
