Cashmere, Esperance port expansion deal

Unlisted public company Cashmere Iron has signed an agreement with Esperance Ports Sea and Land to expand the capacity of the town's multi-user port.

The agreement between Cashmere Iron and EPSL will be wonderful for Cashmere Iron and the Government of WA, but what about the people of Esperance? The present iron ore trains have already cut the town in half. Obviously 50 years ago the people who decided where the port of Esperance was to be built, against the wishes of the locals, made a grave mistake. Now is the time to begin to rectify the situation and build a new port to handle bulk commodities like iron ore, nickel, spodumene (carcinogenic), woodchips, coal, uranium, fuel, and who knows what in the future. This should be done away from the centre of our beautiful town to a place like Butty Harbour so as it would not impact on our town and it's people. Cashmere Iron has planned the development of a 180km standard gauge line from the proposed mine to Menzies. Contributing to a further 15km of line from Shark Lake to Butty Head would be no problem. Instead of contributing to further upgrades of a Port already congested they could contribute to a new Port that will last for the next 100 plus years and save our wonderful town from all the pollution that is coming from the port where it is presently situated. The town is still suffering from the Lead poisoning.
