Measures unveiled for WA gas security

A regulatory framework for back-up plans and a wider variety of gas market arrangements are some of the recommendations to help the state avert future gas shortages, in a report to be tabled in parliament today.

For gas supplies to be secure, the following situation needs to be in place at ALL times:- 1. Various sources of reliable supply 2. A backup supply line(alternative pipeline) 3. THREE MONTH backup storage facility in the Perth/SW Region. Without the above, the issue of having a shortage of gas supplies (as per 2008) will be ever present. Knockout one major supplier - reduced supplies Knockout the pipeline - NO supplies at all No backup storage in cases where supplies are limited or not at all reliant on alternatives (coal in some cases) -HUGE cost to the economy and other possible consequences such as effects on export industries(mining etc)
