Busselton shortlisted for Qantas academy

Busselton has been shortlisted with nine other regional cities nationwide as the potential home for the new Qantas pilot academy, weeks after the environmental watchdog recommended conditional approval for the operations of a $70 million upgrade at the Busselton-Margaret River Airport.

It defies logic why Qantas would want to have a flight school in Busselton-Margaret River when they will only be allowed five flights per week (between 11pm and 6am). Take Wednesday for instance; the whole South West land area was covered in fog. Geraldton was totally clear. This is not a one-off. Why would they not seriously consider Geraldton where we do not have the fog, have uncluttered air space, the City of Greater Geraldton has already committed to a 400-metre runway extension. The other point is that the current government could save taxpayers $70 million.
