Concrete construction group Whittens has won a contract to provide its services to the construction of cryogenic tanks at the Ichthys LNG project in Darwin for an undisclosed sum.
Perth-based Whittens, which has been working on Ichthys since 2013, will provide insulation work on the ceiling and walls across four cryogenic tanks.
The new contract was awarded by Japan-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries in April, and will be completed in August.
The contract award comes two days after Monadelphous Group was awarded a contract by Kawasaki to complete the cryogenic tanks at Ichthys after Laing O’Rourke walked away from the job in March.
Whittens will deploy a workforce of about 70 personnel for the contract, with a spectrum of welders, concreters, form workers and plant operators to be utilised.
Whittens director Clayton Whitten said the new work was a positive indication that the company’s integrated services division was moving in the right direction.
“The future looks very encouraging for Whittens’ services arm, with opportunities increasing across a variety of sectors,” Mr Whitten said.
