Professional services company Turner & Townsend has been awarded an $8.2 million state government contract to establish and operate a program management office that will oversee Metronet’s program of works.

Under the terms of the contract, half of the funds are allocated towards management advisory services, with the other half for project management.

Metronet is the Public Transport Authority of WA's cornerstone transportation and land-use planning program in the Perth metropolitan area.

Metronet stage one is planning to deliver approximately 72 kilometres of new passenger rail and up to 18 new stations.

It also aims to plan the initial development of more than 5,000 hectares of land around the new stations.

In a statement, Metronet said the program management office contract would give it the ability to independently monitor how the projects are being delivered, in both the planning and construction phases.

T&T will support Metronet across its entire program of works, including the Morley-Ellenbrook Line, Yanchep Rail Extension and Thornlie-Cockburn Link.

Turner & Townsend Australia and New Zealand managing director, Anooj Oodit, said the company brought global transport experience, strong local knowledge and insights into international best practice to the program.

“We look forward to playing a major part in delivering a safe, sustainable, cost effective and timely solution for Perth’s transport network,” Mr Oodit said.

Turner & Townsend Western Australia managing director Matt Billingham said the opportunity to work on transport developments of this scale in WA was significant.

“Our PMO team bring to the program the latest industry developments and lessons learnt on legacy projects,” he said.

“They will be shared with the Metronet team and benefit the program by creating an environment of continuous improvement, active engagement and a dynamic approach to project innovation across all known and unknown challenges, opportunities and interfaces.”

Turner & Townsend has been also appointed by Public Transport Authority to provide quantity surveying and cost estimation services for Metronet.
