Three companies to bid for rail project

The state government has invited three companies to tender for the $69 million Denny Avenue level crossing removal.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti announced today that Downer, Decmil and John Holland have been approached to provide tender submissions, after they were short-listed following an earlier expression of interest process.

John Holland, which has not reported any major wins in the WA market since completing the Northlink road project and the controversial Perth Children's Hospital project, boosted its rail capability early this year when it bought the O'Donnell Griffin rail business from the receivers of RCR Tomlinson.

The overall project will be delivered through two design and construction contracts, one for rail and bridge works and another for the road and civic infrastructure.

A six-week request for tender process starting today is for the rail component.

The successful tenderer will be tasked with raising more than 800 metres of track and associated infrastructure 170 metres south of Denny Avenue in Kelmscott, to make way for a new road underpass at Davis Road.

Work is expected to start later this year, while the road package tender is expected to open in November.

When finished, the Davis Road underpass will maintain the east-west connection by road and improve safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The McGowan government committed $415 million in the 2019-20 State Budget towards the removal of four level crossings on the Armadale line.

The Denny Avenue level crossing removal was prioritised due to road users risking their safety by crossing the tracks while the boom gates are lowering or already down.
