At Canning we know that running a business is a constant learning process, and it helps to have people on your side.

The Canning Business Mentoring Program is a free program on offer for Canning business owners and operators to help take their business to the next step along their business journey.

The program offers a range of mentoring opportunities for local businesses of all sizes and at all stages, from start-ups through to seasoned operators.

The 2020 program received a record number of applications from local businesses looking to build skills, adapt and grow both now and in the post COVID-19 world.

There were 49 applicants for 20 sponsored places in the program, with four places in the Curtin Ignition Program still to be selected in late July. It is the largest number of applicants in the program’s four year history.

Most programs started in May, and the program partners adjusted quickly to move their mentoring programs into the digital space.

One of the new programs piloted this year, Young Gems, received the greatest interest. It will take 12 budding entrepreneurs of all abilities or diverse backgrounds on a journey to create their own start-up, delivered in partnership with Multicultural Futures and Gemstar Technologies.

Mayor Patrick Hall, who was once a business owner himself, knows the importance having a mentor can make.

“Now more than ever, our local businesses need a helping hand and we know the guidance and support of an experienced mentor is one way we can achieve that,” said Mayor Hall.

“The Canning Business Mentoring Program is tailored to suit businesses at different stages of their business journey and is completely free, with the only cost involved being people’s time and commitment.”

“The applications for this year’s program reflect Canning’s diverse population with people of all abilities, cultures and backgrounds applying. There was also a great mix of business people, ranging from teenage entrepreneurs through to seasoned business operators.

“We received applications from tradies, foodies, manufacturers, professionals.  What they all have in common is passion for their business and belief in themselves and what they can do,” he said.

The Canning Business Mentoring Program is presented in partnership with the Australian Institute of Management WA, Curtin University’s Ignition Program, Spacecubed, Gemstar Technology, , Entrepreneurs in Residence, Agility Shift and WA Leaders.
