Former St John of God Healthcare executive Shane Kelly has been appointed as the organisation’s new chief executive, replacing the long-serving Michael Stanford, who stood down last month.

Mr Kelly, who is currently serving as group chief executive at Catholic healthcare provider Mater Misericordiae, previously worked as chief executive of St John of God Subiaco Hospital for eight years.

He also spent time as North Metropolitan Health Service chief executive.

Mr Kelly will start work in mid-May.

St John chairman Tony Howarth said Mr Kelly was well-credentialled for the role.

“Shane has strong experience managing a large and complex Catholic healthcare group, with both private and public hospitals and a range of associated services,” he said.

“He has a deep understanding of the Australian healthcare system and strong experience in running hospitals, both public and private.

“His extensive government experience is highly valuable to us, as we have a long standing goal to provide greater public sector work.”

M Kelly said he was looking forward to joining St John of God Health Care as group chief executive.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be given the opportunity to serve in this capacity for such a wonderful organisation; to work with such a high calibre board and trustees, and with our dedicated caregivers and specialist practitioners across the spectrum of services provided by St John of God Health Care in Australia and abroad - much-needed services to patients, clients and other consumers,” he said.

Mr Kelly replaces Mr Stanford, who had served in the role since 2002 and helped grow the organisation to become the third largest non-governmental hospital operator in Australia, with annual revenue of $1.7 billion.
