Rottnest hotel set for major upgrade

The state government has today announced plans for a major upgrade of Hotel Rottnest, while construction of the $20 million Pinky Beach eco village project, being completed by a joint venture between Baileys Group and Discovery Parks, has begun.

The planned expansion of the island’s main resort is aimed at providing premium accommodation, with an additional 80 rooms and a near doubling in size to 17,800 square metres.

The resort, which will be renamed Hotel Rottnest Resort, is set to include four pools, a restaurant, function room, gym and rooftop bar.

Tourism Minister Paula Papalia said the expansion would deliver a luxury resort experience.

"It will encourage new visitors and bring back people who may not have been to the island for years,” he said.

"It will boost competition, create jobs, and make Rottnest a stronger competitor with international holiday destinations."

Mr Papalia was also involved in the turning of the first sod at the new luxury eco village at Pinky Beach.

The $20 million JV project will consist of 83 eco-tents with ensuite pods, connected via elevated walkways through the dunes to the Pinky's Beach Club complex complete with swimming pool, alfresco bar and licensed dining areas.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

Karma is set to bring more luxury offerings to Rottnest when it opens a world-class day spa experience in the coming months.

Mr Papalia said the premium services would add another element to the island.

"The island is changing, and with each new offering creating jobs and opportunities, we are ensuring Rottnest Island remains a world-class, must-visit tourism destination,” he said.

The government said extra ferry services helped push visitor numbers above 80,000 last month.
