Prominent Perth fashion label to close

Monday, 4 February, 2019 - 16:06

One of Perth’s most prominent fashion designers has announced the closure of an internationally successful label, but hinted at plans for something big in the pipeline.

Ae’lkemi was founded by Alvin Fernandez about 20 years ago, and became a high profile Western Australian label with a store in Claremont.

Mr Fernandez was inducted into the Asian Couture Federation in 2014, and was one of three local designers who headed to China Fashion Week in 2017 as part of a program set up by the Fashion Council WA.

On the back of this, a Chinese retailer with around 30 stores in Beijing inked a deal to sell Ae'lkemi designs in that market.

Last year, he was working with local consultancy A.US Official on a plan to expand in the United States market .

Mr Fernandez announced the closure this afternoon on Instagram.

He said there was a tinge of sadness mixed with excitement, and also thanked long-time backers AnnMarie McGinn and her late husband Ross.

“It goes without saying I’m incredibly grateful to have had the constant support of the McGinn’s who provided the opportunities to elevate Ae'lkemi to the strong iconic identity that is today,” he said.

“To my team - I am immensely proud that we have produced such a high level of customer service, quality and craftsmanship of our products for the last 20 years.

“Without your constant support and dedication Ae'lkemi wouldn’t have been possible.

“To my loyal family, friends and valued clients - I have shared many laughs and my heart is full from all the support you have all given me.

“As this chapter closes, I soon look forward in sharing my new direction with you all.”

The closure comes several months after reports Perth identity Samantha Wyllie was planning to join Mr Fernandez in an unspecified business role.

It follows the closure of another prominent label of Perth origin, Wheels & Dollbaby, in October 2017.

That label was founded by Melanie Greensmith in 1987.
