Nulsen, Outcare announce merger

Two Western Australian charities have announced plans to join forces next year, creating a major new player in the sector.

Nulsen Disability Services (Nulsen) and Outcare have begun a merger process under which Outcare will transition into the Nulsen Group structure as a separate trading entity.

Nulsen supports people with complex disabilities of all ages, owning 52 shared-living homes across the Perth metropolitan area and providing nursing support, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, psychology and positive behaviour support to over 190 clients.

The group employs over 700 staff.

Outcare works to improve community safety by reducing reoffending rates, specialising in care for those at risk of entry to the criminal justice system, or who are currently serving a sentence.

The company employs 80 staff and provides accommodation support, career transition services, mental health support and community inclusion.

According to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, Outcare had total revenue last year of $11.2 million, while Nulsen had revenue of $50.1 million, meaning they will together become the sixth largest charity in WA.

Nulsen chief executive Gordon Trewern said the boards of both organisations believed the merger would deliver significant benefits for the clients and employees of Nulsen and Outcare.

“In a changing and challenging community sector, joining up with a like-minded organisation provides an opportunity to sustain and enhance services to our clients as well as create additional career opportunities for our people,” he said.

Outcare chief executive Paul McMullan said the organisations were united by a shared commitment to helping people with complex needs.

“Our values are very similar and if you break it down, we want our clients to live better and more fulfilled lives,” Mr McMullan said.

Nulsen and Outcare will now complete a due diligence process up until June 30, after which Outcare will transition under Nulsen as a trading entity.
