Curtin University of Technology professor Michael Alpers has been elected as a fellow of The Royal Society, the world’s oldest scientific academy, established in 1660. Among his many achievements, Professor Alpers built the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research and remained its director for 23 years until 2000. He is currently a member or fellow of 30 professional societies and associations, and in 2005, was appointed an officer of the Order of Australia for his service to medical science.
