New high school to have Subi oval links

Three senior government ministers faced the cameras this morning to promote plans for a new high school in Subiaco, which will link with shared public open space at the neighbouring football oval.

Premier Mark McGowan was joined by Planning Minister Rita Saffiotiand Education Minister Sue Ellery, along with influential local MP John Carey, to release the first artists impression of the $68 million project.

The school is being designed by a joint venture of Bateman Architects and T&Z Architects, and will incorporate the existing football oval into its design.

The school will be built across different levels spanning three and four stories with modern specialist facilities along with a sports hall, gymnasium, lecture theatres and a library.

Construction is expected to begin mid-next year with the school set to open to year 7 students in 2020, with expansion to 2,000 high school students in 2025.

Ms Saffioti said Subiaco Oval would be retained as a shared facility.

“It is also very close to existing public transport, ensuring the school and future redevelopment is in line with this Government’s METRONET vision,” she said

“The planning framework for the surrounding precinct is currently out for public comment.

“I’m confident the future redevelopment will be a buzzing precinct of new housing options, community facilities and connectivity to Subiaco’s renowned high streets.”

Premier Mark McGowan said the project would create thousands of jobs.

“The development will help provide the school infrastructure required to keep up with the growing student population, particularly in our inner city suburbs where it is desperately needed,” he said.
