The Laugh Resort Comedy Club will return to regular programming tomorrow night as it presents a sold-out opening show at a purpose-built venue within The Shoe Bar & Café, Yagan Square.

Established in 1991, the not for profit is run by comedy industry practitioners, aiming to provide a launchpad for young comedians.

It presented a weekly show in Northbridge for 25 years, before going on a two-year hiatus, and has nurtured performers including Hughesy, Jim Jefferies, Rove, Claire Hooper, Dave Callan, Sami Shah, and Joel Creasey.

Club president Alex Manfrin said the association’s new board was pleased to bring back the Wednesday night institution.

“I overheard The Shoe publican Paul Higgins talking about a new function room,” he said.

“He’s a good friend of the scene, having hosted comedy in his previous venues, and it was great timing as Laugh Resort had been looking for a new home in the city.

“So for us, The Shoe was a perfect fit.”

The new 100-seat venue will host The Laugh Resort monthly, as well as its month-long Fringe World program, which features multiple shows per day by local and touring artists.

“With a few comedy promoters missing from Fringe this year, we feel well placed to create a hub for stand-up, which gives artists the support and fair deals you’d have hoped they’d been getting all along,” Mr Manfrin said.
