BGC Development’s Westin Hotel and Hibernian Place development was picked as the top project in Western Australia in this year’s Urban Development Institute Australia WA awards.
The project, which opened in late April, was picked for the Russel Perry award for urban development excellence, and for excellence in retail, commercial or mixed use development.
BGC Development is a division of BGC Australia.
UDIA chief executive Allison Hailes said it was hoped the development would lead a revitalisation of Perth’s East End.
“Hibernian Place + Westin is an iconic mixed use development on a heritage site that is a genuinely attractive place for workers, visitors and commuters to spend time in,” Ms Hailes said.
The public plaza incorporates gardens and is surrounded by hospitality venues and retail outlets.
The Masterplanned Development award went to Peet for its long standing Lakelands Estate near Mandurah.
“Lakelands is a vibrant, connected and environmentally sustainable development that continues to attract buyers due to meticulous planning and good integration of seniors living options, retail and commercial precincts as well as civic and educational facilities that are all set in a beautiful, natural environment,” Ms Hailes said.
“This project showcased to the judges what a clear vision and and strong leadership can achieve."
LWP Property Group won two awards, best small scale infill development for its Ellenbrook micro lot housing precinct, and best residential development for Trinity at Alkimos.
“Launched in April 2018 at Ellenbrook, Verge is Western Australia’s first “micro lot” precinct, comprising 11 double-storey, free-standing houses, ten of which are built on 80 square metre green-titled lots,” LWP said in a release today.
“Located in the Ellenbrook town centre, adjacent an existing park and close to shops and public transport, this precinct was prime for a new type of housing which reflects modern urban living.
“Trinity at Alkimos was recognised for reflecting an urban, not suburban, residential lifestyle with a strong civic focus contained within three distinct villages, each with their own social fabric.
“Early provision of amenity, community engagement, developing in an environmentally sensitive manner and unique product diversity have all contributed to Trinity’s overall success.”
Yolk Property Group won the affordable development category for its Evermore project in White Gum Valley.
Director Pete Adams said he felt Evermore was a cutting edge project.
“Evermore was the first apartment development for sale in Australia to utilise solar and battery technology in a strata-setting; was the first residential development in the country to use blockchain technology to trade renewable energy; and was the first apartment development in Western Australia to be recognised by Bioregional Australia as a One Planet Community,” Mr Adams said.
