Western Australian Greens party candidate Scott Ludlam has today launched his campaign for the federal Senate, announcing a sustainability platform.
Mr Ludlam, who has previously worked as an anti-nuclear campaigner and party researcher, said it was time to re-think communities, increasing affordability, sustainability and liveability.
"The Greens will work toward a 25% renewable energy target by 2020 and will shift subsidies away from carbon-intensive energy production to level the playing field for alternative energy sources," he said.
"Howard is stalling on climate change, (but) the ALP is not much better, refusing to give up its coal habit."
Apart from the 25 per cent target, the party also stated it would work to transfer subsidies from the fossil fuel sector to renewable energy and energy efficiency, ratify the Kyoto protocol and develop national urban planning standards that provided for the location of high density housing and commercial buildings colse to high capacity public transport.
The party would also aim to repeal WorkChoices, legislate for a minimum standard of pay and working hours, and ensure subsidies for the provision of rental accommodation were target at affordable housing for low-income households.
