Govt spends $2m to vacate old City Beach high school

The relocation of tenants of the old City Beach High School is continuing, despite the government having dumped plans to redevelop the facility for a new public secondary school.

Mark McGowan's Labor government scrapped the previous government's plan to redevelop the old City Beach High School to better accommodate rapid population growth in the western suburbs.

Labor initially planned to use the Perth Modern School site in Subiaco for a new general intake high school, but that was canned when its proposed multi-storey selective school in the CBD met with strident opposition.

Labor's latest plan is to leave Perth Modern alone and build a new high school nearby, alongside Domain Stadium in Subiaco.

However, the government is still paying for the relocation of tenants at the old City Beach High School, with a $2.3 million contract awarded this week to BE Projects to shift the Japanese School to refurbished buildings at the nearby City Beach Primary School.

The International School of Western Australia, which also currently occupies the old City Beach High School, will be relocated to soon-to-be refurbished buildings at the Doubleview Primary School in 2019, at an unknown cost.

The International School will be separate from a new $15.4 million Doubleview Primary School which will be built on the existing site.

A plan for the future of the old City Beach High School is yet to be decided.
