Construction will start later this week on Defence Housing Australia’s 166-dwelling Liv Apartments in Fremantle, after Georgiou Group was appointed as DHA’s building contractor.

The deal is worth around $61 million, with Georgiou to mobilise to the Queen Victoria Street site by the end of the week.

As well as 166 apartments, the project will include around 1,300 square metres of commercial space.

One third of the apartments will provide housing for Australian Defence Force members and their families, with the balance offered for sale to private owners or investors.

DHA managing director Jan Mason said the appointment of Georgiou was a major milestone for the development.

“One of the reasons we chose Georgiou was their reputation for delivering high-quality mixed-use developments, which complements our own tack record as an award-winning property developer,” Ms Mason said.

“We look forward to working with Georgiou in delivering on our mission to provide innovative housing solutions to our customers.”

Georgiou Group chief executive John Georgiou said the company was pleased to have won the project’s main construction contract, after it carried out forward works earlier this year.

Apartment sales at Liv are being handled by MLG Realty.

The project is one of a series of apartment developments that have been proposed on Queen Victoria Street.

Across the road, boutique apartment developer Match, a subsidiary of Lloyd Clark’s MGroup, is putting the finishing touches on its Heirloom warehouse redevelopment, which is 80 per cent sold.

The Heirloom project is a restoration of the old Dalgety Wool Stores, which until recently had been used as a storage facility.

Construction works at Heirloom, which is a joint venture between Match and Sirona Capital, are being under taken by Built Holdings.

Marketing is also under way for The Yard on Queen Victoria Street, a 45-unit project to be built by RHG Contractors.
