Alkimos, Piara Waters, Treeby, Burns Beach and Wellard will all receive new primary schools ahead of the 2022 school year, with the state government announcing the $116 million investment ahead of today’s mid-year budget update.

The schools, which will collectively cater for 2,810 students across five suburbs, will be designed by TAG Architects, Cox Architecture, Carabiner, CHRISTOU Design Group and Oldfield Knott Architects, with construction set to commence in late 2020.

That comes ahead of the 2020 opening of Sheoak Grove Primary School, Beenyup Primary School, Caversham Valley Primary School and Grandis Primary School.

Meanwhile, Baldivis South Primary School, Brabham Primary School, Sunningdale Primary School, Harrisdale North Primary School and Southern River Primary School are scheduled to open in 2021.

Appearing today in Treeby to announce the developments, Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery said the new schools were meant to cater for population growth in the emerging suburbs.

“My priority is ensuring that all children in WA have access to the best possible education we can provide,” said Ms Ellery.

“These new schools will alleviate enrolment pressure at popular existing schools and give families additional education options close to home.”

Premier Mark McGowan said he understood the need for good schools in local areas, calling them the heart of communities in providing essential learning opportunities for kids.

“My Government is committed to building schools and strengthening communities to meet the needs of families in our fastest-growing suburbs,” said Mr McGowan.
