Datacom has secured a $4.5 million contract as part of the state government’s GovNext ICT program.

Under the contract, Datacom will provide maintenance services for the Department of Education’s core Cisco network equipment – currently about 2,000 items.

Datacom is a national business with a Western Australian arm, which focuses on IT infrastructure and services.

The company began in 2007 in WA and has about 95 staff locally.

Datacom won a Business News Rising Stars award in 2009.

Submissions were also received by NEC Australia and Atos, which are also part of the GovNext program.

The contract was previously held by Alphawest (now Optus) for a three-year period.

GovNext was one part of the Digital WA strategy, launched in May 2016.

Its goal was to create more agile, scalable and flexible ICT solutions and led to the signing of contracts with NEC Australia, Atos and Datacom as preferred vendors.

At the time, ICT infrastructure cost the state government about $170 million each year.
