The City of Fremantle has hit back at suggestions it was responsible for the demise of photographic competition FotoFreo.
Media reports claimed the FotoFreo board cancelled the event because it did not expect to receive funding from the council as a major sponsor.
Fremantle council, however, said it told media yesterday that it was likely to support the event, although a final decision would be made at its mid-year budget review later this month.
It said a statement released by FotoFreo earlier this week contributed to the perception that the council was to blame.
The council said it was particularly disappointed that FotoFreo's decision to cancel the event was made before sponsorship was finalised.
“The City of Fremantle places great importance on arts and culture and will continue to support this important aspect of Fremantle’s identity,” the council said in a statement.
“It will not, however, be unfairly held accountable for things that are clearly outside of its control.”
