Contract to build waste treatment plant for Woodside

An Auckland-based industrial services provider has won a contract with Woodside Petroleum to build a treatment plant in Karratha to process waste from the energy giant’s oil and gas operations, for an undisclosed sum.

Contract Resources said today it had struck an agreement with Woodside to construct the plant, which will process spent catalyst and hazardous waste by-products removed from the oil and gas production stream process.

Woodside will utilise the plant, which is expected to be completed by 2018, for an initial seven years.

“Woodside is pleased to be the foundation client for Contract’s new treatment plant, which will provide an innovative and environmentally sustainable solution for the LNG industry in Australia,” Woodside senior vice-president of operations, Niall Myles, said.

“This will mean employment opportunities for our local community in Karratha, through the construction and operation of the plant.”

Contract chief executive Ivor Ferguson said Woodside’s support for the plant’s development was invaluable.

“This new facility will enable LNG waste materials to be processed locally and in a timely and environmentally friendly manner, and eliminates the risks LNG gas producers are currently facing, with local long-term storage and international transportation and disposal of hazardous waste by-products,” he said.

Woodside shares were 0.6 per cent lower to $32.21 each at the close of trade.
