City of Perth scraps alfresco fees

Alfresco dining areas will now be fee-free for restaurant and cafe owners within the City of Perth.

In a statement, the City said its commissioners voted to scrap the fees so its local hospitality businesses could better compete with those in neighbouring areas.

Nearby councils Vincent and Bayswater have scrapped their alfresco fees, but an independent review recommended the City of Perth keep its $98 application fee and $40 per square metre annual permit fee.

Chair commissioner Eric Lumsden said the move addressed the concerns of local businesses and the community.

“Outdoor dining has been a priority for the commissioners, and we’re glad to see an outcome that benefits not only businesses, but City visitors who want to make the most of Perth’s amazing weather,” Mr Lumsden said.

“The updated policy and the accompanying web based application form aim to cut the red tape, and allow businesses to more easily incorporate outdoor dining to their operation.”

The updated outdoor dining policy and guidelines will also allow businesses to serve alcohol in alfresco areas, subject to possessing the appropriate liquor license.

“These new measures will allow City businesses to fully capitalise on their outdoor spaces, and align the service they provide inside their establishment to their outdoor dining area.

“We’re proud to be supporting Perth’s food and beverage scene, and the new policy and guidelines aim to make the City a more vibrant place to visit and enjoy.”

The changes will take effect from 1 February 2019.
